Widgets are very easy to add to social networking sites and bloggers commonly use them to make their blogs more interesting, relevant and fun for their users.
A widget can, for example, organise a blogger's posts by topic, provide stock quotes and news, search boxes for Google, eBay and other popular search-based web sites, as well as provide clocks, counters, games, feeds and more.

Note: widgets are also referred to as gadgets, depending on the source browser, for example in Yahoo the term used is a Widgets , and in Google its GadgetsGadgets can be found under layout when editing your blog. For additional widget, there are directories you can go to, such as Widgetbox, where you can search for a specific type of widget, customize it for your own use, then copy and paste the code to your own pages. Other free Web widget directories include yourminis and Google Gadgets for your Web page.

Discovery Resource:
Take a look at this short YouTube video on Adding a Google gadget to your blog.
Robin Good's video entitled What is a Widget gives a quick and simple overview of Widgetbox and Google gadgets.
Tips
To add widgets from a directory you will need to copy and past a snippet of code to display the widget which is hosted on the developers server.
The following are the steps you need to take:
a. Go to the directory for example Widgetbox and select the widget you want to add.
b. Click on the selected widget
c. Click "Get Widget"
d. Copy the embed code given
e. Back at your own blog in the page elements page, click "Add a Gadget"
f. In the "Add a gadget page" select HTML/Java Script and add the code, also give the gadget a name.
G. Press save et voila, your done.

Discovery exercise:
1. Add a Google gadget to your blog
2. Explore some widget directories such as Widgetbox or yourminis, and then add one of these gadgets to your blog.
3. Write a post about your experience.

Optional exercise:
4. Create your own avatar by experimenting with Voki.

What is Voki? Voki enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. You can customize your Voki to look like you or take on the identity of lots of other types of characters… animals, monsters, anime etc. Your Voki can speak with your own voice which is added via microphone, upload, or phone, or you can type text into the programme and choose a voice to speak your text. Very nifty! Voki lives on your blog, social network profile and will soon be integrated in various instant messaging platforms.

You will also be able to download it to most video supported phones.
Have a look at some of the options at Voki
A short YouTube vidoe on How to add an avatar to your blog - it's child's play!LNSS Administratorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09848793320667845009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258201436841764807.post-75049847675438420712009-08-20T10:47:00.002+01:002009-08-20T10:49:30.701+01:00Week 6 - Ebooks, ebook readers and eAudiobooksEbooks, ebook readers and eAudiobooks
eBooks and eAudiobooks are digital versions of printed books that are available for downloading from the web. Some titles are freely available, others are subscribed to by the Glucksman library, and many are available for individual purchase from booksellers' websites. One of the advantages of eBooks is that you can search within an individual title or across a collection of titles whereas searching the print version of a title is confined to the index and table of contents. One disadvantage of ebooks has been the nature of the devices used to store and display them, such as PCs and laptops. However, the development of ebook readers, such as the Sony ebook reader and the Kindle, has made downloading and reading ebooks a more user-friendly experience.

Have a look at this YouTube video on ebook readers

eAudiobook are books that are narrated and downloadable from the web as sound files. Since 2004, Google has been working with some of the world's largest libraries to digitise their book collections and make them available through Google BOOKS.
Many classics that are out of copyright are available in full text, some can be downloaded as pdfs, while newer titles are available in parts to preview.

Discovery Resources:
Google BOOKSAgreement between Google and US publishersImplications of the agreement

Discovery Exercises:
1.Explore Google BOOKS
2.Find a title that is available in full, for example a classic novel by Dickens, Austen or Shakespeare. Throughout this programme you will be required to register with various web sites e.g. Google, Blogger, Flickr, facebook etc

Flash is required to view many of the applications. Chances are this is already installed on your computer, but if it is not, click here for a free download.

Adobe Reader is required to read a few of the links. If you do not have it, you can get it free here.

Always read any instructions the site offers regarding uploading, exporting, labelling, or whatever you are trying to do.

Not all sites like all browsers equally so switching browsers may solve your problem. Most sites seem to work best with the latest versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Clicking on the Refresh/Reload button in your browser can make a stubborn tool wake up or, alternatively, try closing the site/browser/program and re-opening it. This often solves the problem.

Not all links work all the time. Since there are often multiple links on a page to get to where you want to be, try clicking on another link. This often works in Blogger.

Firewalls and filters can limit access to sites or block actions on sites. Try clicking on a different link to that screen or just click again. You may need to work on a different computer if you can’t do what you want.

Check your browser settings - make sure pop-up windows are enabled, allow cookies, and make other setting changes to see if that solves the problem. Many sites require plug-ins like Flash to operate. Be sure you have the most up-to-date versions installed on your computer. Do a search on the plug-in name to find the download, then follow the directions to install.

Most sites like Blogger, Bloglines, Google, Flickr, & YouTube will have a Help or FAQ section. Use these to solve your problem. Bloggers helpsite

Many Web 2.0 tools are in beta which is not the final version of a product or Web site, but close enough to show in public and work the bugs out. But the bugs may still pop up when you are using a site.
LNSS Administratorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09848793320667845009noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258201436841764807.post-38418165158269663242009-05-26T13:35:00.007+01:002009-09-17T12:00:50.731+01:00The 24 thing!Welcome to final, final exercise in the LNSS Learning 2.0 programme!

Thing 24 is really an invitation to consider how you and your library can keep up to date with web 2.0 tools - both those we have learned about in the LNSS Learning 2.0 programme, as well as other ones which may already exist or become available in future. These web tools are constantly changing, and, as library staff, we need to stay aware of them and evaluate their usefulness in providing services to our library users and support to ourselves.

You and your colleagues will have ideas about how you want to go about keeping up-to-date and you might like to incorporate some of these suggestions:

Set up a Blog, to share experiences of new Learning 2.0 tools with your Colleagues in your own library and those of the LNSS Consortium

Set up a discussion board to share experiences

Meet for coffee occasionally to chat informally about your experiences

Set up a library Wiki

Set up a presence on a social networking site, if you would think it would benefit your library

Use Library 2.1 (a blog set up after the original Learning 2.0 project)

Have a look at the Webware 100 winners.

Have a look at 43 things that you might want to do this year - Stephen Abram inspired the original Learning 2.0 programme

And please let us know how you are getting on and if you find good ways of staying up-to-date! Producing, commenting, and classifying are just as important as the more passive tasks of searching, reading, watching, and listening."

We’ll be looking more closely at Web 2.0 applications that take serious advantage of tagging (we've already looked at few - Flickr, YouTube, librarything and blogs all use tags). Tagging, remember, allows you to associate keywords with online content - webpages, pictures, posts, etc.
It is considered a folksonomy, aka an unstructured categorisation scheme, unlike the more formal taxonomies that require adherence to strict rulues and vocabularies eg. The Library of Congress.

As a library employee you know a thing or two about these – At the University of Limerick we use the largest categorisation scheme on the planet, Library of Congress subject headings.
Also known as the red books, the LCSH is the most comprehensive list of subject headings in the world and as such is the only one accepted as the worldwide standard.

This week we’ll look at still more innovative applications that take great advantage of tagging – Delicious and Technorati

Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site that lets you save bookmarks to a central location (so that you can access your web favourites regardless of the browser or computer you're using) and then describe them all with tags so that you can easily find them again.

How is that social? Well, in addition to tagging your bookmarks, you can see how other users have tagged the same links and see related websites are important to them. This is an excellent way to find websites that may be of interest to you. Delicious even offers RSS feeds {link to blog} - you can create a shared bookmark site (say, for your team) and receive news every time a new link is added (say, when one of your colleagues add a new link). It is also being used to assist with collaborative online reference.

Discovery exercise:

1.Take a look around delicious using the account we have created for this project

Note: In this account you will find lots of resources that have been highlighted or used throughout the course of the Learning 2.0 program. Most packages will let users indicate if they are online or offline by way of status alert (such as busy, at lunch or away), and these packages can be turned on or off as appropriate. Some resources will also allow people to share a search, participate in a video chat, use audio or send/receive files. These types of games typically need you to pay close attention in each level or you may lose ‘lives’ and eventually lose the game. Some puzzle games, such as Zuma (see Pop Cap Games below), can also fall under the arcade category because they also require hand-eye coordination combined with speed and strategy / problem-solving skills.

BOARD GAMES
Many of our favourite board games have been put into digital format of one kind or another such as Monopoly, chess, checkers, backgammon and many others can usually be found and available to play with others around the world.

CARD & DICE GAMES
Ever played Solitaire, Crazy 8s or Go Fish? How about Poker, Rummy or Yahtzee? These are card or dice games, so card & dice games online are just representations of these favourites.

PUZZLES, BRAIN-TEASERS & LOGIC GAMES
Crosswords, sudoku, word find, jig-saw puzzles, trivia games, memory games, etc. all fall under this category. It also includes some arcade games (again, such as Zuma from Pop Cap or Tetris). Essentially, any game which makes you stop and truly think about your next move (even board games such as chess) falls into this category. Anything which tests your brain and really gets you thinking is a puzzle, brain-teaser or logic-game. You can test and compare your time/high-score with other players (if the web version still exists).

MMORPGs
This stands for Massively Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game. These are typically graphical adventure games in which many players can logon at once and either play at the same time or even play with each other or against each other. They integrate arcade style gaming with table-top role-playing puzzles and games of logic and much more. Most revolve around a series of ‘quests’ which your character must accomplish to continue onto the next level, whether the ‘next level’ represents a new area on the game or simply new abilities and statistics for your character.
Some of them are set up like the older arcade style games, such as the Legend of Zelda and Mario Bros. with a miniaturized ‘imp’ or ‘avatar’ running around a relatively 2-D, cartoon-ish realm, slaying monsters, finishing quests, etc (e.g. Maple Story). And others are more 3-D and very realistic in their graphics, running in a third-person or first-person perspective and even closely resemble cinematic productions (in truth, some of their ‘teasers’ look like movie trailers).
An example of this would be World of Warcraft.

MUSH (text-based environments)
A short-form for “Multi-User Shared Hallucination”. Simply put, a MUSH is an online, multi-user, text-based environment. Some are games, some are social and technical support environments and still others are research areas.
Imagine a series of chat rooms strung together which you can ‘move’ through and each ‘room’ has a description on it, telling you what kind of environment it represents (e.g. a cave, a living room, a forest, etc.). Now, for the gaming environments, toss in a game theme like Dungeons & Dragons or Vampire: the Masquerade, or even tv themes such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Firefly and movies such as the X-Men and you have a text-based roleplaying environment based on those themes.
The non-gaming environments are slightly different and some do have ‘themes’ that are more for background colour than anything else. Some are used for research purposes (MIT’s MOO, LambdaMOO, etc.) and some are purely social. Some MU* game hosting services have MUSHes set up to provide on-hand, real-time support to game owners who are experiencing technical difficulties as well as to provide a social environment for the game owners to meet in and ‘network’.

Social Environments
These are graphical or text-based environments online where the primary function of visitors is to socialize. These are kind of akin to sites such as Facebook or MySpace, but are even more interactive because they are set in “real time”, like MUSHes or instant messengers. It has become very popular in Ireland and all over the world in the last few years and if you tune into your local radio station on the way to work you don't have to listen long until some one mentions Twitter.

So what is Twitter?

Look at this short video presentation to explain what Twitter is:
Twitter - in plain english
(a youtube video created by Common Craft)

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default).
Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.

Examples of twitter users include Barack Obama, The Library of Congress, Stephen Fry.

Discovery Task:
1. Explore twitter and set-up an account (this is an optional task). Do a search to see if a friend or a library you know has a twitter account.
2. These applications provide users with the ability to create and share documents over the internet without the need for installed desktop applications.

Some experts speculate that this emerging trend may mean the death of Microsoft Office and other software-based productivity tools, while others think web-based applications have their place, but not in the office. But no matter what side of the office suite platform you side with, on this both sides seem to agree; web-based applications have their place.

One large benefit to web-based applications is that they eliminate the need to worry about different software versions or file types as you email documents or move from PC to PC.

Another advantage is that they easily accommodate collaboration by allowing multiple users to edit the same file and provide users with the ability to easily save and convert documents as multiple file types (including HTML and pdf). And, you can even use many of these tools, such as Zoho Writer and Google Docs to author and publish posts to your blog. It’s this type of integration with other web 2.0 tools that also makes web-based applications so appealing.

For this discovery exercise, participants are asked to take a look at a web-based word processing tool called Google Docs or Zoho Writer, create a simple document and then document your discoveries in your blog. If you are up to the challenge you might even export your document as a HTML file or publish it through Zoho to your blog.

Read through the Google Docs tour or watch Google Docs in Plain English.

With Zoho, Google Docs and other web-based applications, the possibilities are endless.

Discovery Resources:

A short list of web-based productivity applications – (authored by Helen Blowers in Google Docs)

A longer list of web-based applications - (authored by Helen Blowers in Google Docs)

Discovery Exercise:

1. border="0" /> In 2005, "podcast" was named the "word of the year" by New Oxford American Dictionary and with the growth of podcasting over the last few years, it's easy to see why.
Podcasts take many forms, from short 1-10 minutes commentaries (like the podcasts that have been created for this Learning 2.0 program) to much longer in person interviews or panel group discussions. There’s a podcast out there for just about every interest area and the best part about this technology is that you don’t have to have an iPod or a MP3 player to access them.
Since podcasts use the MP3 file format, a popular compressed format for audio files, you really just need a PC (or portal device) with headphones or a speaker. iTunes, the free downloadable application created by Apple is the directory finding service most associated with podcasts, but if you don’t have iTunes installed there are still plenty of options.

Discovery Rescources:
Have a look at the Blog created by Podcasting Ireland to explain Podcasting.

Please watch this short video presentation to explain about Podcasting.
(a Youtube video presentation by Common Craft)

Some Podcasting Directories
http://www.podcastingireland.ie/
http://www.podcastdirectory.com/
www.learnoutloud.com/podcast-directory

Optional Advanced Resources: (for those who want to learn how to create a podcast of their own)
Beginner's guide to Podcasts & Creating Podcasts
How to podcast tutorial

Discovery Exercise:
1.Take a look at itunes or one or two of the podcast directories listed above and see if you can find a podcast that interests you. See if you can find some interesting library related podcasts, like book review podcasts or library news.
Have a listen to the podcast tour of our own library here at the University of Limerick.
2.Do a search for your favourite radio station, find a podcast that interests you.
for example: http://www.rte.ie/radio/podcast/
3.Add the RSS feed for a podcast to your Bloglines account
4.Finally, create a blog post about your discovery process. Did you find anything useful here?

Optional: If you're very ambitious, why not try down loading Audacity and create a podcast of your own and then add it to your blog.
Note:
Click on download Audacity 1.3.6 (Beta)
Lame MP3 Encoder will allow you to convert your recording into an MP3 file.LNSS Administratorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09848793320667845009noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8258201436841764807.post-89581384365810692472008-11-20T14:13:00.002+00:002008-11-20T14:21:32.508+00:00Rollyo#12 Roll your own search engine
Listen to this podcast [1:32]-->powered by ODEODo you have a group of websites that are your favorites?
