Most of you will have heard of Twitter by now. It has become very popular in Ireland and all over the world in the last few years and if you tune into your local radio station on the way to work you don't have to listen long until some one mentions Twitter.
So what is Twitter?

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.
Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default).
Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.
Examples of twitter users include Barack Obama, The Library of Congress, Stephen Fry.
Discovery Task:
1. Explore twitter and set-up an account (this is an optional task). Do a search to see if a friend or a library you know has a twitter account.
2. Write a blog post about your experience. Do you think twitter could be relevant to your library? How would it help your customers?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of setting up a twitter account for your library?

ReplyDeleteThe library has a new ebook, all about Twitter. search for it by title or keyword in the catalogue. It discussed how Twitter can be used for internet marketing.

I signed up for Twitter and am following the UL Environmental Society and the INULS conference site. I don't see myself using it, though I can see that a family or group of friends might get into it. I can't see it working for library purposes, because you'd have to get people to follow you, and how many 'tweets' would be relevant enough to all followers to make them interested? I suspect that twitter won't be around for very long. I prefer Instant Messaging for quick contact.
